In March of this year, I was one of three volunteers that won a paid volunteer placement with Raise the Roof Kenya through Vodafone Foundation’s World of Difference programme. This opportunity meant that for six months I was able to work part time from my regular job, and spend the rest of my time focusing on working for RTRK.
As RTRK is run by volunteers this was such an excellent opportunity for me to know I had set hours and days in week in which I could dedicate to fundraising for RTRK. As a grants fundraiser in my 9-5 job, this was one of the fundraising
Vodafone Foundation were fantastic programme hosts; organising everything from a motivational induction day, to facilitating a blogging community where we could share our experiences and learn what other winners were up to on their placements.
For a small charity like RTRK this programme not only allowed us to network with like-minded individuals at other small charities, but also meant for the first time we had ‘staff’. The team achieved a lot in the three to six months of each of the placements and I know we ended our placements feeling motivated to continue volunteering with the same pace and passion. Completing this placement has to me, reinforced how volunteers are the cogs that make the charity work. I would like to thank the Vodafone Foundation for this experience, but would also like to thank my fellow volunteers for all that you do to support RTRK.
